Supporting a European smelter to align with industry standards, align with European regulations such as Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and enhance the approach to traceability and due diligence.
For a European mineral processing and smelting company, Hyacint Consult was requested to support the further strengthening of the responsible minerals sourcing program.
In line with the over-all sustainability ambitions of the company, the cooperation served to align with OECD and UNGP, as well as prepare for re-audits of the LBMA Gold and Silver standards. Relevant minerals included Nickel, Zinc, and Copper.
Our team collaborated closely with the client to prioritize key areas for improvement, which included:

Pro-active approach to ensuring information on minerals origin and improve traceability of minerals purchased and processedIn-house training on ESG risk and impact management and evolving (EU) regulatory and industry standards on sustainability due diligence

Supplier ESG risk assessment methodology and tool, to enable prioritisation of supplier engagement and risk mitigation efforts, as well as board-level decision-making.
Throughout the collaboration, Hyacint Consult team provided ad-hoc advisory and back-stopping support to the responsible sourcing program manager and involved commercial team. Outcomes
As result of the collaboration, the client benefited from an enhanced and user-friendly approach and tool to supplier engagement to assess business partners' governance, legal compliance, risk profile of geographies sourced from, sustainability and ESG risk management capacities.Through the enhanced insights, methodology and tool, the client's management team can be informed in a more comprehensive manner, allowing internal decision-making on start, continuation or dis-engagement of a supplier cooperation.
