ActionAid - Stakeholder engagement in the natural stone industry
Supporting due diligence and stakeholder engagement in the black granite industry
As an NGO, ActionAid is currently working to support sustainability in the black granite supply chain to deepen understanding on the stakeholders involved and support responsible business conduct in the sector. In relation to sourcing from Zimbabwe, which continues to be the main source-country for black granite sold in The Netherlands and Belgium, funding was received from RVO, to initiate a collaborative effort to enhance sustainability in the black granite supply chain.
The project builds upon the voluntary RBC Agreement ‘TruStone’, implemented by Dutch and Flemish naturestone companies as well as NGO’s and governments and trade unions.
For the first phase of the project, the involved parties are conducting due diligence, a life cycle assessment, stakeholder mapping, and a risk analysis. The actions on supply chain transparancy and stakeholder mapping in the black granite supply chain and stakeholders demand additional support, requested by ActionAid and their partners from Netherlands and Belgium, Italy and Zimbabwe.
Upon request of ActionAid and the involved companies, Hyacint Consult provided its expertise to support the stakeholder mapping as essential step towards stepping up collective and individual actions towards realizing responsible black granite supply chains.
The collaboration focused especially on sourcing from Zimbabwe, which continues to be the main source-country for black granite sold in The Netherlands and Belgium. Hyacint Consult facilitated one awareness raising workshop and a supply chain actor dialogue.
Our key expert provided its expertise to support a supply chain mapping and stakeholder mapping as essential steps towards stepping up collective and individual actions as part of due diligence and ESG risk management. A set of recommendations was provided to step up supplier engagement and utilize ‘leveragel’ on certain supply chain actors as part of due diligence and suggestions were put forward on engaging stakeholders in the risk assessment process.
